Exploring Ancient Anuradhapura
Last November, I visited ancient Anuradhapura twice, which carries the rich Sri Lankan heritage created by our ancestors. Anuradhapura is the first kingdom in Sri Lanka and was ruled by some of the greatest kings, such as King Pandukabhaya, King Devanampiya Tissa, and King Dutugemunu. Arahant Mihindu brought Buddhism to this island during this era. This visit became a truly memorable experience for me.
Anuradhapura is one of the most iconic cities in Sri Lanka because it is famous for its ancient ruins, giant lakes, and warm hospitality. The surroundings were calm and respectful. When I went to the Ruwanwelisaya in the evening, I felt as if it was everything I had wanted throughout my life. It was extremely peaceful and gave a great sense of calm and relaxation to the mind.
No matter your country or religion, I suggest visiting at least once—you will definitely become enchanted by the city of calm. When I looked outside from the vehicle’s window, everywhere, I saw green paddy fields, and peacocks were dancing around. Just like nature, I also met friendly people who were kind and helpful, which made the visit even more enjoyable. Being a Sri Lankan is a blessing because, when I travel from the south to the north of Sri Lanka, every province carries its own unique characteristics. If I try to describe them in my words, I feel I am doing them an injustice.
Another episode is coming soon—stay tuned.
These words are my own experiences that I have gained throughout my life. Visiting Anuradhapura made me appreciate Sri Lanka’s rich history and culture, and experience such calm and friendly hospitality. It taught me to value history, culture, and kindness in everyday life. Reading this blog reminds me of the peace and beauty of Anuradhapura. These pictures were taken by me during the journey.
