Sri Lankan Cuisine

Sri Lankan cuisine is rich in flavors and spices. Its traditions shape diverse cultures. Basically, most curries are cooked with coconut milk. Rice and curry is the core of Sri Lankan cuisine, usually served with a variety of vegetable curries, dal, coconut sambol, and fish, chicken, or an egg. Cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, cloves, coriander, cumin, turmeric, ginger, chili, and maize are used in cooking. These spices are used not only to add flavor but also for their medicinal benefits. All or some of these spices can be found in home gardens. Spices are a symbol of Sri Lankans’ rich heritage and cultural identity. Sri Lankan cuisine is unique and unforgettable.

In addition, hoppers, string hoppers, and Kottu Roti are also popular dishes. Moreover, eating milk rice before beginning any auspicious activity is a traditional practice among Sri Lankans. Kaum, Kokis, Aluva, Idli, Murukku, and Aggala represent both savory and sweet dishes. These dishes vary according to the region and culture. During occasions such as the Sinhala and Tamil festivals, Thaipongal, a variety of foods can be seen in almost every household.

Sri Lanka is also famous for wild seafood dishes. Fish curry, cuttlefish curry, prawn curry, and crab and lobster curry dishes are enjoyed by people all over the world. Sri Lankans usually eat food with their bare hands. Facilities for this are available throughout the country, and it is part of the food tradition. On the other hand, this island has a rich street food culture and short eats. Short eats like rolls, patties, and cutlets are made with many delicious fillings. They can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Usually, Sri Lankans do not eat just to satisfy hunger. Sri Lankan cuisine isn’t just about food; it is a symbol of tradition, culture, and hospitality of the country.

In those videos, tourists greatly enjoyed Sri Lankan food and gave excellent reviews. So, I decided to write my own blog about the excellence of Sri Lankan foods.
